Sign language plays an integral role when it comes to communication, especially for the many people around the world that struggle with speech-impairment. Within India itself, in spite of the large population density that accounts for countless individuals with cognitive and speech difficulties, Indian Sign Language (ISL) continues to remain widely unrecognized and under-utilized in educational and social settings. In fact, a 2023 report by the World Health Organization even indicated how approximately 6.3 crore Indians suffer from significant auditory impairment, yet less than 2% of them know of or are trained in ISL.
Such a drastic lack in awareness and familiarity greatly hinders socio-economic progress and integration at large for affected individuals. It also percolates into limited access when it comes to availing rehabilitation services and essential support resources as most caregivers and family members continue to not understand or communicate in ISL.
Recognizing these very challenges, The Indian Sign Language Community has been conceptualized to foster more inclusivity and support for speech-impaired individuals by promoting better access to appropriate therapies and ISL training. By creating informative tools and raising awareness through grassroots level interventions, the initiative aims to create a community that not only recognizes but prioritizes the integration of individuals within educational, professional and social spheres.
